We are not talking so much these days.
Of course we are still speaking to each other but over the last decade we have significantly changed the way in which we communicate in terms of the applications and devices we use.
Use of physical, fixed lines and desk based phones has fallen away dramatically in recent years with UK industry regulator Ofcom reporting that the number of phone call minutes on legacy fixed lines has dropped by 41% in just seven years and whilst some of this fall has been taken up by an increase in the use of mobile devices the net fall is some 26 billion minutes a year.
A prime example of this behavioural change was exampled recently with the news that accountancy giant PwC, with 18,000 staff and 24 offices in the UK, has done away with landlines and phones at offices desks with all staff expected to only use mobile phones by the end of the summer.
In recent years SMEs have been progressively dismissing the use of landlines in favour of mobile devices but PwC was the first example of a large organisation doing so.
One of the key reasons for this change in calling patterns has been the rise of ‘over the top’ services (OTT).
An OTT application is any app or service that provides a product over the Internet and bypasses traditional distribution networks. Services that come over the top are most typically related to media and communication and are generally, if not always, lower in cost than the traditional method of delivery.
You may be familiar with OTT services such as YouTube, Netflix or Amazon for streaming video and Skype or Facetime for voice/video calls and WhatsApp or for messaging and voice calls.
What you may be less aware of is that in parallel with these typically home retail apps there has been a development of business grade OTT applications.
